woodland hills dentistWe all have it from time to time. Whether you call it morning breath, halitosis, or “Oh my gosh, please breath in the other direction,” it’s all the same thing: bad breath. The good news is, there are lots of reasons why people have bad breath, so there are lots of ways to fix the problem.

1.   Brush your teeth

Yup, sometimes it’s just that simple. Brushing your teeth removes food and bacteria that cause bad breath. And depending on your toothpaste, as an added bonus, it leaves your mouth minty fresh.

2.   Floss between your teeth

Breath is not saved by brushing alone. Food trapped between your teeth can actually begin to rot in your mouth, producing a foul odor. So make sure nothing is trapped between your teeth and gums.

3.   Clean the soft tissue of your mouth

Taking care of your teeth is only half the job of good oral hygiene. Odor causing bacteria can grow on any surface in your mouth. So brush your gums, tongue, and cheeks too. If you feel that there’s a strong buildup, purchase a tongue scraper to remove bacteria from your tongue. Use an alcohol-free mouthwash to kill any remaining bacteria.

4.   Watch what you eat and drink

Coffee drinkers know that chugging java may lead to skunky breath later in the day. The caffeine dries out your mouth. Add a dry mouth to the sugar most people add to their cup of joe and you have a playground for bacteria. Plus, coffee contains high levels of sulfur that comes out in your breath. But coffee isn’t the only culprit. Many healthy foods such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli are also high in sulphur and can add odor to your exhale.

5.   Drink plenty of water

If your mouth feels dry, it probably is dry. And a dry mouth encourages the growth of bacteria, so keep your mouth moist with good hydration. Be aware that some medications, including antihistamines and diuretics, can cause a feeling of dry mouth that just drinking water won’t remedy. In those cases, look for mouthwashes and pastes designed for dry mouth sufferers.

6.   Stop using tobacco

Smoking is horrible for your whole body, but it wreaks havoc on your breath. It’s not just the smoke that gives you dragon breath. Tobacco contains sulfur that you must exhale, much to the chagrin of those around you. Plus, just the act of smoking dries out your mouth, making it easier for oral bacteria to do their dirty work.

7.   Suck on a sugar-free mint

Sucking on a sugar-free hard candy does two things. First of all, it causes your body to make saliva, moistening your mouth. Secondly, the candy’s flavor, especially mint, will linger in your mouth and cover any other odor that might be present.
