Set Off That Summer Tan With Teeth Whitening

A bright white smile and a summer tan is a classic look. If you’ve spent time outdoors this summer, you might have slowly and safely developed a healthy sun-kissed look. While the sun, or a bottle, can give you the tan, it won’t do anything about stained or yellow teeth.

That’s where the dentists at Couture Smiles Dental Group come in. We offer safe and effective teeth whitening treatments and professional-grade at-home trays to patients from in and around Woodland Hills, California.

Teeth whitening procedure

Professional teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments. It’s a quick, effective, and inexpensive method of enhancing your smile. Teeth whitening usually involves a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel that you wear on your teeth for brief periods.

Here at Couture Smiles Dental Group, we use KöR® whitening. You sit in one of our dental chairs for the treatment. We begin by putting a soft, plastic guard in your mouth to protect your gums and lips from the whitening gel. Next, we carefully apply the gel onto your teeth. A special light activates the whitening gel, which accelerates the process of lifting stains from your teeth.

After approximately an hour, we turn off the light and remove the gel to reveal your new bright white smile. KöR® whitening method provides dramatic results in just one session. Your teeth can lighten as much as eight shades.

If in-office teeth whitening isn’t for you, we also offer an at-home option. We provide custom trays and professional-grade bleaching gel, along with instructions about when to wear them and for how long.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening treatments are safe. Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity after their whitening treatment. While this isn’t comfortable, it’s not dangerous, and it doesn’t interfere with your dental health.

Some types of tooth discoloration, such as trauma, tetracycline exposure, or excessive fluoride exposure, don’t respond to topical teeth whitening treatments. If this is the case for you, we can discuss other options, like veneers and dental crowns, to cover your discolored teeth.

Don’t do it yourself

While over-the-counter teeth whitening kits are approved by the FDA, they’re minimally regulated, which means that they might not be as safe as in-office treatments.

Over-the-counter (OTC) teeth whitening kits aren’t nearly as effective as a professional treatment. Drugstore kits contain a much lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide, meaning that you need to apply the gel more often, and you get less effective whitening. You might need to use products like this for several weeks. This can lead to increased tooth sensitivity as well as substandard results.

Additionally, OTC products are not custom-molded to your teeth, which increases the chances of getting the bleach getting on your gums, tongue, or cheeks. This can damage the soft tissue in your mouth and cause increased pain and sensitivity.

Maintain your results

Teeth whitening isn’t permanent. The same lifestyle factors that caused your staining in the first place can build up again. Coffee, tea, wine, soda, and tobacco are some of the most common culprits of yellow, discolored teeth. Limit or eliminate your use of these products to maintain your bright white smile.
