Your smile makes an enormous impression on those around you and reflects your personality. At Couture Smiles Dental Group, located in Woodland Hills, California, our experts strive to help you have the smile you want, and sometimes that means dental crowns or dental bridges.

Both dental crowns and dental bridges can be effective in repairing your smile. They are both permanent prosthetic devices and don’t need to be removed for cleaning. The one that works best for you depends on several factors.

Dental crowns

Sometimes people refer to dental crowns as “caps.” That’s because a dental crown sits over and covers a tooth that is damaged. Installing a crown both strengthens the tooth so it can survive, and it improves the alignment, shape, and appearance of the tooth.

If you have a missing tooth, your dentist can implant a post into your jawbone for a crown to attach to. This provides a tooth-like shape and structure, so you can chew and bite normally.

Crowns are attached with cement so that they are permanent. You brush and floss normally once the crown is placed.

Crowns are often used when:

  • A large filling needs replaced and there’s not enough tooth left to hold a new filling
  • You want to protect a weak tooth
  • A tooth is broken or cracked
  • You have a discolored tooth
  • You need a root canal and need to protect you tooth

Crowns are versatile restorations and only need a few appointments to place.

Dental Bridges

When you have a tooth or teeth that are completely missing, a dental bridge may be a better option. A bridge is basically three or more connected crowns — one for each of the teeth on either side of the gap, plus a false tooth that will go in the middle.

The teeth on each side of the gap are called abutments. When you have a bridge, those teeth serve as support. The false tooth in the middle is called a pontic.

Our dental team may recommend a bridge if you:

  • Want to restore your smile
  • Can’t chew or speak properly due to missing teeth
  • Need the support to keep your face shape the same
  • Evenly distribute the force of your bite and prevent further damage
  • Keep your other teeth from moving

Like crowns, bridges can be installed in as little as two visits to our office.

Materials used for crowns and bridges

Various types of materials can be used for either kind of prosthetic. If your missing teeth are in the front of your mouth, you may want porcelain or ceramic because those can both be matched exactly to the color of your other teeth.

Metal alloys or gold can be used as well. The color difference is obvious, so those are often the best choice for teeth in the back of your mouth. Our dentists discuss all of your options thoroughly before the procedure, so you have time to consider and think about your choices.
