You may have received a recommendation for a root canal for one of many reasons, from problems with fillings to cracks or breakage in one of your teeth. Depending on the location of your root canal, we may recommend finishing off the procedure by installing a custom-made dental crown on top of the treated tooth.
Today’s dentistry and endodontics can have your root canal procedure done quickly, safely, effectively, and without much discomfort. You can depend on the team at Couture Smiles Dental Group to recommend the best treatment options for your dental health, taking into account your unique problems, health history, and personal lifestyle.
Often, after you have a root canal, we recommend that you have a permanent crown cemented into place to cap your treated tooth. Here’s what you need to know about why you might need a crown as part of your root canal treatment plan.
Location, location, location
Whether or not you need a crown following a root canal mostly depends on the location of the tooth that needs treatment. If you need a root canal performed on a tooth located in the back of your mouth, like a molar or a premolar, we’ll likely recommend a crown as part of your treatment.
That’s because the teeth at the back of your mouth bear the brunt of the grinding motions associated with chewing. As you eat during the day, you place pressure on the top of these teeth. Teeth used primarily for biting, like incisors and canines, might not need a crown as part of a root canal.
After we cement your permanent crown over your tooth after your root canal, it becomes a working part of your mouth, helping you chew your food for healthy digestion. You’ll need to continue to practice good dental hygiene, as you can still develop cavities in a tooth with a crown.
Custom design for permanent crowns
It typically takes one additional office visit to place and cement your permanent crown following your root canal treatment. After we remove the inflamed material from the interior of your tooth in the root canal part of the procedure, we cover the treated tooth with a temporary crown made from resin while we specially formulate your custom permanent crown. Crowns are typically ready in around 7-10 business days.
We hand-create your crowns individually at our in-house aesthetic dental lab, based on a custom cast of your mouth, and flawlessly match the color to your existing teeth. At Couture Smiles Dental Group, we offer porcelain crowns that won’t become discolored over time or create stains at your gum line. Naturally tooth-colored and translucent, porcelain blends in perfectly with your smile, so no one will be able to tell you’ve had dental work done.
